FORATOM urges the European Commission to support the Supply Chain of the Nuclear power Plants in the EU

The safe and reliable functioning of the european nuclear capacity depends on the availability of a supply chain strong and diversified, that ensures high levels of quality. According to the report of FORATOM posted on June 10, 2020, the European Commission should support member States of the EU in the conduct of a review of the regulatory framework to allow the use of modern components of high quality are manufactured in other industries.

As noted in the strategic vision of the European Commission “A Clean Planet for All”, the nuclear power coupled with renewables into the energy mix in 2050, thus, reducing the emissions of CO2.   in spite of this,  the average age of European Nuclear power Stations is 35 years old, which means that without an extension of the shelf life, 90% of the plants will be stops in 2035.

Improved security is one of the fundamental pillars in the programs of life extension of nuclear power plants, therefore, it is necessary to have a supply chain strong and diversified that allows to demonstrate high levels of safety, quality and reliability.

In the report made by FORATOM with the title “and optimising the European Nuclear Supply Chain – Use of High-Quality Industrial Grade Items in European Nuclear Installations” presents the following recommendations to draw on the experience of the European supply Chain in the use of components of commercial grade high-quality:

  • Development of a European Guide to include a common methodology to establish the acceptance criteria for components of commercial-grade, high quality standards for safety-related applications.
  • Development of a National guidance in the member states of the EU to the use of high quality components, and commercial grade, based on the european guidelines proposed above.
  • Review the procedures used in the nuclear industry to establish the foundations for a more efficient marketplace.
  • Self-assessment of the european nuclear industry to identify the best solutions, around the harmonisation of requirements and best practices in manufacturing.

Nucleonova as a company specialized in the Engineering of Supply, is part of the supply chain of the nuclear power plants, performing the tasks of search of suppliers, evaluation, guidance on the manufacture, control and monitoring, Dedication Grade Components Trade (CGID) and preparation of dossiers end. Therefore, know first-hand the need to harmonize the supply chain and share the experience gained in European Nuclear power Stations. With this objective, Nucleonova supports initiatives such as the one presented by FORATOM, and actively participates in a number of Forums for the sharing of experiences and identification of challenges and the best solutions within the supply chain of the nuclear power plants.
